Meal Prep Saves Thousands

June 24, 20254 min readBy SmartBudget Team

Meal prepping is one of the most effective ways to reduce food spending without sacrificing nutrition or taste. A few hours on Sunday can save you hours and hundreds of dirhams during the week.

Start simple. Do not try to prep twenty-one meals at once. Begin with lunches for the work week. Five containers of a simple protein, grain, and vegetable combination.

Invest in quality containers. Glass or BPA-free plastic containers with tight lids keep food fresh longer. Good containers prevent leaks and make meal prep enjoyable rather than frustrating.

Batch cook proteins. Cook a large quantity of chicken, beef, or lentils at once. Season simply so the protein works with multiple sauces and sides throughout the week.

Prep vegetables separately. Cut vegetables stay fresh for several days if stored properly. Keep dressings separate until eating to prevent soggy salads.

Use your freezer strategically. Soups, stews, and cooked grains freeze well. Make double batches and freeze half for future weeks when you are too busy to cook.

Plan around sales. Check grocery flyers before planning your meals. Base your prep on what is affordable and in season that week.
