How to Negotiate Your Salary

March 25, 20255 min readBy SmartBudget Team

Salary negotiation is one of the highest-return skills you can develop. A single successful negotiation can earn you tens of thousands more over your career.

Research market rates before the conversation. Know what people with your skills, experience, and location are earning. This data gives you confidence and credibility.

Do not give a number first. If asked about salary expectations, deflect by saying you want to learn more about the role first. Whoever names a number first usually loses leverage.

Frame your request around value. Do not say you need more money because rent went up. Say you have delivered specific results and want your compensation to reflect that value.

Practice the conversation out loud. Role-play with a friend or in front of a mirror. Negotiation is uncomfortable, and preparation reduces anxiety significantly.

Consider the total package. Benefits, remote work flexibility, bonuses, and stock options can be worth as much as base salary. Sometimes a lower base with better benefits is the smarter choice.

Always get the final offer in writing. Verbal promises can be forgotten or misunderstood. A written offer protects both you and the employer.
