Smart Grocery Shopping

Food is one of the largest variable expenses for most households. The good news is that it is also one of the easiest to optimize.

Plan your meals weekly. Before shopping, decide what you will eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Check your pantry first to avoid buying what you already have.

Buy seasonal produce. Fruits and vegetables in season are cheaper, fresher, and tastier. When something is out of season, use frozen alternatives which are often more nutritious than fresh imports.

Use store brands for staples. Generic rice, pasta, oats, and spices are usually identical to name brands at half the price. The savings add up quickly.

Shop the perimeter of the store. Fresh produce, dairy, meat, and bread are on the edges. Processed, expensive items are in the middle aisles.

Never shop hungry. Studies show that hungry shoppers buy more high-calorie, expensive items. Eat a snack before you go.

Embrace batch cooking. Make large portions of soup, stew, or curry and freeze individual servings. This reduces both food waste and the temptation to order takeout on busy nights.
